Happy New Year! In this month’s newsletter we are looking at the following:
- As the cold weather starts to bite, the Health and Safety Executive website shares useful information regarding how to support you workers in keeping warm this winter. Particularly for those of you required to work outside, you can take practical steps to keep your team as comfortable as possible when working in the cold, such as: Provide appropriate protective clothing for cold environments; provide mobile facilities for warming up and enough breaks to allow workers to get hot drinks or take a break in heated areas.
- Asbestos never leaves the table as a hot topic in health and safety and the HSE have recently launched another campaign this month to help businesses and organisation understand their legal duty and responsibility for their own premises and those they work on, all with the central aim of preventing exposure to asbestos.
- The HSE have prosecuted following the death of a 45 year old man who died while attempting to move a scissor lift. The courts found that Nationwide Platforms Limited failed to sufficiently consider the dangers of operating machinery via moveable controls, and failed to provide appropriate monitoring and supervision during the morning when drivers were loading machinery onto their lorries. The Company was fined £900,000.
